A
young, naive girl, acting as a companion to a rich over bearing
American woman, meets the handsome Maxim de Winter whilst in Monte Carlo.
Mrs Van Hopper effects an introduction on the pretext that Maxim was once
at a party given by her nephew. She explains that Maxim is very wealthy,
owns a huge country estate called Manderley and has recently lost his
beautiful vivacious wife, Rebecca. |
|
For
two glorious weeks they enjoy each others company then the fateful day
comes when Mrs Van Hopper wants to return to New York. Desperate to see
him before they leave our young heroine bursts in on Maxim. Maxim offers
her a choice- New York or Manderley. She is confused. Does he want a
secretary? Her naivety is endearing to him and when he says he wants her
to be his wife, she is overwhelmed. They marry swiftly and simply,
honeymooning in Venice before setting off for Manderley. But what
does she know of Maxim? Only that he is wealthy, twice her age and had
lost his first wife in a boating accident. |
|
She
is ill prepared for the welcome that greets her. Ill prepared for
Rebecca's all-pervading presence in Manderley and the influence she still
has on the household. We meet the newlyweds as they first arrive at
Manderley and watch our new Mrs De Winter battle with the devious
housekeeper, Mrs Danvers and the ever-present spectre of Rebecca. |
